IS IT WORTH THE PRICE?
Can a personal life coach really help me? This is the question everyone asks before they hire a coach. Will the service be worth the price? It is a reasonable question.
There are different kinds of coaches. There are consultant coaches. There are advice-giving(direct coaching) coaches like in sports. There are “holding you accountable” coaches. Then there are non-directive coaches. That’s me.
A NON-DIRECTIVE COACH
I am a non-directive coach. What you want to talk about is in your control. As your coach I am just in charge of the process. You will get results. I am committed to helping my clients find their own solutions.
Projects can be difficult. Whether they are personal or work-related they can be over-whelming and difficult to get off the ground. A coach helps their client think in a new fresh way. “Tell me more about that” is a warm invitation to encourage people to go deeper.
Family and friends may ask questions. However, they often listen only long enough to find a space to interrupt. Then they give their opinion with what they think needs to be done. They think that they are helping but mostly they are shutting their friend down or irritating the person in need of help.
VALIDATION STIMULATES THE BRAIN
A good non-directive coach will help their client think through ideas; ideas that the client has never taken time to explore before. Every intelligent person needs time to think. When someone gives them time to think and when that person intently listens to them, it creates a feeling of validation. This actually helps the neurons in the brain to work more effectively.
A valuable coach NEVER presumes what their client wants in a session after only a few sentences. I will always ask my client what they want out of each session. I will clarify it. I repeat it back to my client. In this way I make sure I am on the same path. Because I am committed to helping my client find they own solution, these are vital steps I take.
A coach helps a person think–process -and stay on track without passing judgement. Even if I my client is going in the wrong direction I must not have an agenda. A good non-directive coach will train themselves to keep their opinion out of the equation. I am always reminding myself, “This is about my client’s thoughts and decisions- not mine.” My service is to help my clients explore their priorities, values and choices with their project in mind.
If my client is struggling with choosing a course of action, I might ask them, “How might you gain more information in order to make the best decision?” This way I don’t limit them but stimulate them to be creative in searching for more resources.
I believe in Dynamic, Effective, Results. When I ‘hire a coach’ that’s what I expect for my money. When I am ‘hired to coach’ that is what I am committed to give.
